HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN & SAMHAIN
The Halloween tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or “darker half” of the year. It is held on November 1, but with celebrations beginning on the evening of October 31, since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. According to History.com, the evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. This is about halfway between the autumn equinox and winter solstice.
Some ancient traditions to celebrate these traditions include feeding the ancestors by leaving food and offerings on an altar. Dia De Los Muertos, a Mexican celebration stemming from the same traditions, happens on November 1 as well.
